Urban italian by andrew carmellini5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Prick each potato several times with a fork and place on a baking sheet or in a roasting pan large enough to hold them all in a single layer. Center a rack in the oven and preheat to 425☏.2 tablespoons grated Parmesano-Reggiano.4 large Idaho potatoes (about 2 lbs.), scrubbed. We ate ‘em with freshly grated cheese and canned tomato sauce – then we went outside and made snow angels in the empty streets. Everyone ooh’d and ah’d as the gnocchi bobbed up to the top of the pot. In fact, it’s exactly what I made as survival food when I was trapped at a good friend’s apartment with a bunch of people during a city-slamming snowstorm. I love gnocchi! Gnocchi would be my last meal if I got to pick it’s the food I’d want to have if I could only have one. Gnocchi is the reason that I went to Italy gnocchi is the reason that I became a chef. The goldfinch about5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() We’ve seen this happen a hundred times before, just about always during awards season. ![]() What cast a winding spell on the page has become an occasionally compelling but mostly labored live-action illustration. ![]() Yet what you experience isn’t the book, exactly it’s the strenuous creative labor that went into adapting it. Roger Deakins’ luscious cinematography lends the movie the creamy clarity of a dream. Watching this faithful-in-a-literal-way yet somehow skittery cinematic transcription of Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2013 art-mystery novel, you can tell that the director, John Crowley (“Brooklyn”), and the screenwriter, Peter Straughan (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”), did everything in their power to get the novel up on screen. “ The Goldfinch” is this year’s entry in what has become, by now, a time-honored genre: the high-toned awards-bait literary adaptation that, for all the skill and care and ambition that’s been lavished on it, doesn’t quite work. ![]()

Broken Daydreams by Calvary Dominique5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Those young and old who, just like Calvary, are bored with this trend-driven, high-obsessed era, would find a kindred spirit in the narrator of "Broken Daydreams." The tale of his spiritual journey through childhood, adolescence, and teen years is exciting, unique, and yet relatable. ![]() And nobody realizes that more than Calvary. His stories of attending church, youth group, and Christian camps are not what one would expect from a member of Generation Z. In a world dominated by technology, political turmoil, and broken economy, holding your head above water is almost impossible. Like everyone else in his generation, seventeen-year-old Calvary Dominique is waging war against time. ![]()

Michael kimmelman the intimate city5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() These intimate, funny, richly detailed conversations between Kimmelman and his companions became anchors for millions of Times readers during the pandemic.
