The conversation turns to puberty and then Maureen asks if Pecola has ever seen a naked man. The four girls then walk together, and initially Maureen is very friendly to Pecola, talking about movies with her and treating her to ice cream. Led by Frieda, the MacTeer sisters stand up to the boys and get them to leave Pecola alone. These are the insults of choice, even though many of the boys' fathers might also sleep naked and the boys themselves are all black. The three girls run into a group of boys who are tormenting Pecola Breedloveby chanting about her blackness and her father's supposed habit of sleeping naked. ![]() On an unseasonably warm day, Maureen happens to choose to walk with Claudia and Frieda part of the way home. The writing style in Punk 57 by Penelope Douglas is silver and quite interesting, but the story is flawed. The book has several sex scenes that are quite explicit, but they are written well and fit within the story’s context. Nevertheless, he keeps up the charade and pretends to be someone else.īelieving Ryen to be someone she’s not, Misha tries to win her over while also dealing with his struggles. ![]() However, something’s wrong when they are paired up for a project at Ryen’s school, and Misha realizes that Ryen isn’t the person he thought she was. ![]() Despite their different backgrounds, the two become close through their letters and start to confide in each other. Ryen is a popular girl at her school who loves Gallo’s pizza, while Misha is a sweet nerdy girl fantasy who enjoys reading trashy erotica novels. The Punk 57 plot revolves around their online friendship and how they learn to navigate their feelings for each other. But everyone says if you wanna read ToA you have to read HoO first or else it won’t make sense.īut honestly, if HoO is gonna ruin the original PJO books or characters for me, then I’d rather just skip them and go right into ToA and risk being confused. Like, Percy is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time, and if these books are gonna make me have a worse opinion of him, no thanks. And that’s what makes me not wanna read them. I’ve heard people say that in HoO Rick ruins Percy’s character in some ways.
